Hytale Farming Guide: Crops, Seeds & Essence of Life
Learn how to farm in Hytale. Covers the Farmer's Workbench, Essence of Life, planting crops, watering, workbench upgrades, and cooking meals.

Farming in Hytale isn't just a nice-to-have - it's the fastest way to generate Essence of Life, the resource that fuels nearly every agricultural and animal system in the game. Get your farm running efficiently and you'll have a steady supply of food, crafting materials, and currency for seeds and upgrades.
This guide covers everything from your first crude hoe to advanced farming techniques that'll have you harvesting like a machine.
# Setting Up Your Farm
Before you can plant anything, you need a Farmer's Workbench . This is your central hub for all farming activities - crafting tools, buying seeds, converting crops, and more.
Craft it at any standard Workbench using 6x Any Tree Log and 20x Plant Fiber. Plant Fiber comes from cutting tall grass and bushes - you'll have plenty just from clearing an area for your base.
The Farmer's Workbench has six sections: Farming (tools), Seeds, Saplings, Essence of Life, Planters, and Decorative. You'll spend most of your time in the first three.
Place a storage chest within six blocks of your Farmer's Workbench. The bench can pull items directly from nearby chests, saving you from constant inventory juggling.
Once you have the workbench placed, craft these essential tools before thinking about seeds:
The Crude Hoe tills soil so you can plant seeds. Equip it and right-click on any dirt or grass block to prepare the ground. Tilled soil appears darker and slightly textured - that's how you know it's ready. If there's clutter on the ground (grass, flowers, debris), left-click to clear it first, then till.
The Watering Can is technically optional, but skipping it is a mistake. Watered crops grow roughly 2.5x faster than dry crops. The difference between waiting 25 minutes and waiting 10 minutes adds up fast. Fill it at any water source by right-clicking, then pour water on your tilled soil. Each crop only needs to be watered once - when the soil gets darker, you know it's been watered.
Crude Shears are used to harvest wild crops you find while exploring. This is how you'll get your first Essence of Life to bootstrap your farm.
# Understanding Essence of Life
Essence of Life is the agricultural currency of Hytale. You spend it to buy seeds, craft farming tools, purchase saplings, and upgrade your workbench. Every crop you harvest gives you both the vegetable AND some Essence of Life.
This creates a profit loop: spend 2 Essence on wheat seeds, grow and harvest the wheat, get more than 2 Essence back plus the wheat itself. Reinvest the profit into more seeds, expand your farm, repeat.
You can't buy seeds without Essence, but you can't farm Essence without seeds. The solution is wild crops. Explore the world and look for mature wheat, corn, lettuce, carrots, and pumpkins growing naturally - they're common in grasslands and plains biomes. Use your Crude Shears to harvest them. You'll get the crop itself plus Essence of Life, and occasionally a seed.
Don't eat your first harvest. Reinvest that Essence into seeds at the Farmer's Workbench to get your farm loop started.
# Planting and Growing Crops
Once you have some Essence of Life, head to the Seeds tab in your Farmer's Workbench. At Tier 1, you can only craft Wheat Seeds and Cabbage Seeds - both cost 2 Essence of Life each.
Here's the basic planting process:
- Use your Crude Hoe to till a patch of dirt or grass (right-click)
- Equip your seed bag and right-click on tilled soil to plant
- Fill your Watering Can and water each planted tile
- Wait for crops to mature (check for the harvest prompt)
- Press
Fto harvest when ready
When crops are fully grown, you'll see a prompt to press F (Interact). Holding F while walking lets you harvest continuously across a large field - much faster than clicking each crop individually.
Plant in rectangular rows or grids for easier watering and harvesting. Build fences around your crops to protect them from mobs, and leave paths between rows so you can move through efficiently.
Hytale heavily rewards active farming. Here's roughly how growth timing works:
- Dry soil (no water): Very slow - around 30 minutes per crop
- Watered soil: Standard speed - around 10 minutes per crop (2.5-3x faster)
- Watered + Fertilizer: Fastest - around 5 minutes per crop
Rain also waters your crops automatically, but you can't rely on weather. Use your Watering Can.
Once you upgrade your Farmer's Workbench to higher tiers, you can craft the Fertilizer Bag . One bag covers multiple tiles and stacks with watering for maximum growth speed. Fertilizer requires Poop (yes, really - animals drop it), Essence of Life, and vegetables.
# Upgrading Your Farmer's Workbench
This is where many players get stuck. To unlock better seeds like corn, carrots, cauliflower, and turnips, you need to upgrade your workbench to higher tiers.
The Tier 2 upgrade requires Softwood Logs - and this trips people up because regular wood won't work. Softwood comes from two tree types:
- Beech Trees: Light brown trunks, bright green leaves. Found throughout the Emerald Grove.
- Aspen Trees: White speckled trunks, orange/yellow leaves. Found in Maple Forests and areas with orange foliage on the map.
Chop these trees down and use the logs (Beech Logs or Aspen Logs) for your workbench upgrade. The Tier 2 upgrade also requires a Greater Essence of Life , which you craft by combining 100 regular Essence of Life.
Buy Beech Saplings (5 Essence each) at your Farmer's Workbench and start a tree farm next to your crops. Saves you from trekking into the forest every time you need more Softwood.
Each subsequent tier unlocks more seeds, tools, and features. Tiers 3 and above also require petals from rare plants (Azure, Blood, and Storm Petals) found in other biomes, so expect to travel. The Tier 2 upgrade is the most impactful - it unlocks the crop-to-Essence conversion feature and significantly expands your seed options.
Here's what each tier unlocks:
- Tier 1: Wheat, Cabbage, basic tools
- Tier 2: Corn, Carrots, Lettuce, crop-to-Essence conversion
- Tier 3: Cauliflower, Turnips, advanced tools (requires Forgotten Temple memories)
- Tier 4+: Exotic crops, expanded animal integration
Stick with wheat and lettuce initially - they provide reliable returns while you build infrastructure.
# Cooking and Eternal Seeds
Growing food is only half the equation. Raw vegetables restore minimal health. Cooked meals provide stat bonuses like Health Regen and Stamina boosts.
Craft a Chef's Stove to turn your harvest into proper food. It pairs naturally with your farming operation - grow crops, cook meals, head out on adventures with actual sustenance instead of chomping raw cabbage.
Very rarely (about 0.5% chance), when harvesting a crop, you might get an Eternal Seed. These are the jackpot - Eternal Seeds stay planted forever and regrow after each harvest. No replanting required. At higher workbench tiers with certain Forgotten Temple memories unlocked, you can also craft Eternal Seeds directly - but they're extremely expensive. Still, worth the investment for a truly passive food supply.
# Advanced Tips
Once you've got the basics down, here are some ways to optimize:
At Tier 2, the Essence of Life tab unlocks direct crop-to-Essence conversion. Trade surplus harvests for additional Essence instead of letting vegetables rot in storage. But don't convert everything - keep some crops for cooking and workbench upgrades.
Feed Bags and Capture Crates (both crafted with Essence of Life) let you attract and relocate animals. Animals produce byproducts and Poop for fertilizer. Advanced farmers combine crop rotation with animal husbandry for parallel resource streams.
Press F7 to activate the identification overlay when looking for Softwood trees. Hover over any tree to see its exact type displayed at the top of your screen - no more confusing Beech with Oak.
