## Backstory

Some have lost the excitement that they initially felt when they first watched the timeless [Hytale trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o77MzDQT1cg) in 2019, but we hope that those of you that are taking the time to read this article still feel the anticipation as we near the long-awaited release. We are sure that the Hypixel team have come too far to give us an underwhelming game, and we have extremely high hopes for the team to offer us a complete, feature-full, and robust game.

The hype around Hytale has likely been a valuable lesson for the Hypixel team, the amount of popularity and publicity the trailer received must have been unexpected. The team likely dreamt for the trailer to receive the publicity it did, but shortly felt overwhelmed by the sheer scale of which they were reaching. It must be hard in the development process to find the sweet spot where you can begin to market the game, whilst continuing to work on and perfect it, especially when the marketing brings in 60 million keen players, not even mentioning the backing from Riot Games.

## What we Know About the Release

The team have learnt from previous experiences that providing their future users with hollow release estimates often end in disappointment, which is a lot less desirable than meaningless excitement. Although the team have not been publishing blog articles and development updates anywhere near as frequently as they were back in 2020, it's best to keep optimistic and assume they're just working hard on giving us Hytale as soon as possible! In their 2021 Summer Development Update, the team states:

> "What has become increasingly apparent is that we have several more years of work ahead of us before Hytale is ready to launch. We don’t want to provide another estimated launch window that turns out to be incorrect. However, we no longer expect to be ready to launch Hytale before 2023 at the earliest, and it could very well take longer."

It's safe to say with their previous release date catastrophes, they're not going to make the same mistake again. We can say with confidence that Hytale will release in 2023, with a possibility of being 2024. The team can't afford to lose the respect of their fanbase, knowing another rushed release date would upset a lot of people.

We talk a lot about the features within the Adventure Mode of Hytale, but not enough is discussed about the potential of the multiplayer and the modding community. As Hypixel (the Hytale developers) have experienced developing servers, minigames and a community within Minecraft, they have an **extremely** large amount of experience in how to create a rigid foundation of a game, whilst simultaneously allowing a lot of flexibility and creativity for developers working on servers and modding. 

The Hytale client & server are seperated into using two **different** technologies, we will be going through the differences below.

## Server Technology

Servers will undoubtably be a **massive** part of Hytale, and after watching the trailer for the 163rd time, we are sure Hytale will be an amazing foundation for many creative, exciting mini games.

Hytale Servers will run on [Java](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_(programming_language)), which is the same as Minecraft. During a blog post related to server technology, the Hytale team stated their reasoning behind Java being the server language:

>  For one, our backend team is very comfortable writing high-performance Java and that has let us heavily optimize our server code. Furthermore, we know that our community has a lot of experience with Java too - it’s important to us that it is as easy as possible for server operators to get up and running.

Hypixel have also stated that Hytale server technology will be shared source, which means that anyone can read the server code.

Java is an object-orientated programming language, which is compiled to bytecode that can run on any machine that supports JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Java is widely adopted and the underlying computer architecture has no importance, as long as the compiled code is running on a JVM. If you would like to learn Java in preparation of creating a super awesome Hytale server, we've added a few resources to get started on the basics below:

## Hytale Client Technology

The Hytale client is written in [C#](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_Sharp_(programming_language)) (C Sharp), which is a another object-orientated programming language, which shines in encompassing static/strong typing, imperitive, declarative and component-orientarted programming disciplines.

Unlike the server technology, the Hytale client will **not** be shared source. This is in an attempt to provide a secure, common and reliable experience for all players.

### NPC Behaviours

In the [Introduction to Building NPC Behaviors](https://hytale.com/news/2019/4/an-introduction-to-building-npc-behaviors) blog post, the Hytale team showcases how the way NPC's react with their environment can be modified using JSON.

JSON is a lightweight format used to store and transport basic data. Out of the three technologies showcased, JSON will be the easiest to pick up and begin to start playing around with! ### Modding & Plugins

Fortunately, Hytale has taken modding into consideration and have created many awesome resources to make creating mods within Hytale a lot easier. Hypixel have gone above and beyond and made sure **everything** within Hytale will be able to be modded, ranging from the environments and weather, to dungeons and monsters! This means we're sure to see a *Burnable Kweebec* mod sometime soon!

Other than in-game scripting shown in the [trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o77MzDQT1cg), not much is known about how mods or plugins can be developed, we will update this with more info when suited.

After a successful launch, we're **extremely** grateful and satisfied with how the past 24 hours after our release has passed. We (the HytaleGuide team) have sunk many hours, along with even more sleepless nights into HytaleGuide, and I can happily say I have absolutely no regrets. We are super excited for Hytale to launch and even more excited to watch our community grow even stronger.

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of our first (significant) release of HytaleGuide, which came with an update that brought user registration, commenting and badges to HytaleGuide, outlined in our (very old) [tweet](https://twitter.com/HytaleGuide/status/1117594213846274058). After a myriad of updates and multiple complete overhauls, we're extremely proud to announce the **best** version of HytaleGuide!

## What Has Changed?

We're hoping you don't need to read this guide to work out what has actually changed with the platform, but other than a sexy new look, HytaleGuide 3.0 has brought many new awesome features to life, which will be outlined and explained below:

#### Wiki Creation & Editing

Users are now able to submit their own wiki pages that will be listed in the relevant category, currently supporting: [items](/items), [mobs](/mobs), [zones](/zones), and [alterverses](/alterverses). You can check out this feature and submit your own page by visiting the [Create Dashboard](/create). All submissions will be manually reviewed and you will be notified within 24 hours whether your submission has been approved or denied.  You are also able to edit existing pages on the wiki by clicking the **Edit Page** button on each wiki entry.

#### Community Forum

One of my personal favorites, we have added a sleek new [Community Forum](/forum) to HytaleGuide. The forum provides a place for Hytale enthusiasts to discuss, theorize, and just chat to other members on the platform (not forgetting about earning that sweet sweet reputation)!

#### Overhauled Badges

Badges (formerly known as achievements), have undergone a complete overhaul and have been scaled to provide a levelling system, which allows users to progress their badge to higher levels. Don't forget to claim your limited edition **Club 3.0** badge by visiting the [Home Page](/) and clicking the confetti covered button on the right of the page!

#### Notifications

When signed in, you will now recieve notifications for activity throughout the site. Some of the activity that you will see in your notifications include:

- Earning and progressing badges
- Other users upvoting your forum posts and comments
- Replies to your comments
- Approvals / denials of your wiki submissions / edits

There are several other features that have been implemented, but we're sure you'll find them out as you explore the site!

## Future Plans

Despite the countless hours sunk into working on HytaleGuide, we're commited and even more motivated to bring awesome new features to life, we have many plans for the near future that we will be announcing shortly. If you have any feedback or suggestions, be sure to leave a comment below!

Hytale is a game that was inspired by Minecraft, but are they similar at all? From the first glance, we can all see the similarities between Minecraft and Hytale, being that they are both vovel-based block games with the appeal of community servers. However, there are a plethora of features that have been developed by Hypixel (the Hytale developers) that are not present in Minecraft. We're going to go through some of these examples.

Many features that make Minecraft so unique have been abolished in Hytale, such as the famous pattern-drawing crafting system. Crafting in Hytale simply requires the materials in the players inventory and a click of a button.  Hytale has a more complex physics system set in place, which results in trees falling over when chopped down with an axe, as well as regular items being able to be thrown at an object, shown in the video below.

Mobs are extremely more complex in Hytale as apposed to Minecraft. Mobs will act in specific ways to suit their habitat and surroundings, this is demonstrated by the deer, who has been revealed to be uniting in packs. But these behavior characteristics aren't limited to their own species, mobs are able to have complex relations with each other. Such as the Outlander Rangers that are known to hunt bison, and the Kweebecs and Trorks that have had a rivalry in the Emerald Grove since we found out about them.

Another huge difference that sets Hytale apart is quests & boss battles. Hytale features many in-built quests in Adventure Mode, which serves as a guide for the player to follow, only if they choose to. These quests also feature many boss battles such as the Outlander Colossus and the Yeti, which seem to be much more abundant than the 2 bosses in Minecraft.

Magic is an element of Hytale that doesn't exist in Minecraft, excluding potions and enchantment of course. But we're talking about magic **weapons**, cool right? Many different magic spellbooks have been teased in various gameplay footage showcasing how many different types of weaponry there is in Hytale.

Unfortunately, we can't go into detail about all of the cool and unique features Hytale has to offer, so here are some honorable mentions:
- Complex farming
- More in-game animations
- Easily modded

- In-game server list
- Alterverses
- Vertical slabs

Don't just take our word for it, when questioned if Hytale is will be a **Minecraft Killer** Noxy, (Hypixel CEO) stated:
> I also want to dispel a few misconceptions. We love Minecraft, We get on well with Mojang and Microsoft. There's been a number of occasions when we've cooperated on things, they invited us to a bunch of Minecons etc! We've hung out in real life - we've shared stories and meals.

How is Hytale Different to Minecraft?

The **Hytale model maker** is a piece of software that enables creators to model, animate & texture models in Hytale. The HMM allows for 3D modeling of game assets ranging from entities, items to prefabs. This supports modders and creators to create unique assets that can be used **within** Hytale.

As well as texturing assets, the Hytale Model Maker provides the ability to effortlessly animate actions for mobs in Hytale. In the video shown below, you can the Hytale Model Maker being used to animate the running animation for a zombie within Hytale.

From the teasers that the Hytale team has released, the Hytale Model Maker allows creators to be able to switch between built-in software texture programs, to other photo editors - such as Adobe Photoshop CC (shown in sneak peeks in the HMM blog post). This may not seem like a huge deal, but it allows for a **significant** amount of extra features added to the program, such as gradient mapping, and blending options that can be used in the third party photo editors, and then subsequently used within the HMM.

Have you ever wondered the question:

These people are using similar software such as Blender, CraftStudio & Blockbench, as they wait in anticipation for the release of the HMM. CraftStudio is the application that will likely have the most resemblance to the Hytale Model Maker, due to the fact that Hytale hired the developers of CraftStudio do help create an enhanced version of the Hytale Model Maker.

In most survival games, PvP & combat is one of the most important parts to get right as a developer. Hytale is no exception. Due to the fact that Hypixel Studios (Hytale creators) have a long history with Minecraft, they will know that combat will be an extremely important factor in Hytale's success.


Combat must have the perfect balance between simplicity, and depth. This is because a new player must be able to quickly learn the basics, however, a veteran should always be able to improve their PvP ability. Many players claim that Minecraft had this balance perfectly, however in their controversial 2016 [1.9 Combat Update](https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Combat_Update), the player base was split into two groups that prefered the other way of combat. This is because Mojang completely revamped combat from a fast-paced click fast to fight style to a slower-paced method.


So what do we know about Hytale combat? Hytale hopes to diversify combat by adding a large amount of different weaponry. Hytale won't be a game like Minecraft with just a sword and a bow, there will be many, many ways to fight mobs in the game. Hytale features the 4 categories of combat: melee, ranged, defence and magic. Melee weapons come in all shapes and sizes. For example, we know there will be axes like the Demonic Axe that will be used for close up melee combat. However, not only do the different melee weapons have a varying amount of damage stats, many weapons also come with varying attack speed, dual-wielding capabilities and attack extras that will allow for buffs such as a life-stealing effect that allows you to gain a small amount HP for all of the damage you inflict to other enemies.

We also know that there will be magic in the game, which allows your player to learn magic spells that you can use to heal & buff yourself, but also to damage enemies. In the graphic shown below, you can see a concept that looks to showcase the different key elements in Hytale: Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, Wind, and Void. We can assume these to be the core elements used in magic.

Hytale have recently revealed in the [April 30 2020 Progress Update](https://www.hytale.com/news/2020/4/progress-update-april-30-2020) that there will be 2 different item selection wheels in Hytale, key binded as default to Z for items/weaponry, and X for consumables. The Z key will be used to display an item selection wheel for items such as Shields, torches and blocks, whereas the X will be purely for consumables, such as food, drink & alchemy potions.

We also know that Hytale will feature a crafting system different to Minecraft, where the player must explore the map and find the different crafting recipes, instead of just gathering the materials required to craft the weapon.

Ever since the launch of the trailer, we have all been wondering if Hytale will be a free-to-play game, or if it will come at a price. Obviously there are positives and negatives to having a free-to-play game, you bet we'll be diving into all of the information in this rundown.


Free-to-play games are always a gamble, however if done right - it can be worth the loss of the initial cost. Hytale or Hypixel Studios have not stated whether Hytale will be a paid or free-to-play game yet. When Hytale took part in an [FAQ](https://hytale.com/news/2018/12/hytale-faq), they revealed information about their business model.


When asked if Hytale would be a free to play or paid game, they replied with:

> We're still finalising the exact details of the business model. When that's done, we'll share more details!

This lets us know that it is a possibily that Hytale will feature a free-to-play business model. If so, there is a possibility that they could introduce micro-transactions within the game. These micro-transactions could include:

- Customizable character changes (only affecting aesthetics)
- Access to more games/features within the game
- In-built server hosting
- Concept similar to Minecraft's Realms

There is a high probability that Hytale will be a paid game, with the price likely ranging between $10-20. Whether Hytale becomes a free-to-play game or a paid game, you can bet your sweet cheeks us at HytaleGuide will be playing it at the release date!

Hytale is a game that has been on many people's radar ever since they first announced it with their [Official Trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o77MzDQT1cg) in December. There is an extraordinary amount of hype around the game due to some of the incredible features showcased in the trailer and [Blog Posts](https://hytale.com/news). While we have no confirmed exact date for Hytale's release, it has been confirmed by the Hypixel team in the [November 2019 Development Update](https://hytale.com/news/2019/11/november-2019-development-update) that Hytale will be *playable* by everyone in **2021**.

When asked if Hytale would use a beta testing platform, they replied with:

> Yes. You can register for the waiting list right now, in fact! Keep an eye on our website and social media for more information about upcoming tests.

In the latest [blog post](https://hytale.com/news/2019/5/rising-expectations-new-challenges-and-next-steps-an-update-from-the-hytale-team), they talk about how the success of the trailer *raised the stakes* when it comes to development, and meeting the player's expectations. We can only try to understand how much pressure the developers are feeling as it's safe to say they were not expecting the trailer to be viewed 50,000,000 times. Due to this fact, development may take longer than initially anticipated by the team, and we can only wait and see what the future has to offer.

Usernames are a huge part of any multiplayer game, every player wants an attractive username that fits them specifically, however in Hytale, usernames are unique, meaning a single name will not be able to be used twice. This unfortunately means if you're not first to choose your name, someone else might take it before you! Hytale announced that in the coming months, they will be rolling out their name reservation system:

> Hytale usernames will be unique. This means that there can only be one 'Bob' or one 'Sally'. We understand how important names are to players, so we're excited to let you know that we've developed a name reservation system that will become available at some point within the next few months. More details to come.

Due to the fact that this was announced during their FAQ blog post on the 13th of December 2018, we can be sure this system will be announced very soon. We assume in order to reserve your chosen username, you should be ready to fill out a form on the [Official Hytale Website](https://hytale.com/) as soon as the system releases and frequently check your email that you signed up for beta with to see if you have received an email about reserving a username as there will be many players like yourself that are itching to grab their OG name. When choosing your username for Hytale there are a few things you should take into consideration, such as ensuring the name isn't inappropriate. This is because when the game comes out, having an inappropriate username could hinder your ability to play on certain servers, as they might not allow users with explicit names. It has currently not been confirmed if you will be able to change your name once you've created an account. So you should make sure you don't choose a name that you will regret if you're not able to change it at a later date.
